Rose Lukhele aka JOZIA was born in 1993 in Daveyton, a township near Johannesburg. As long as
she can remember, she always wanted to be a musician. Her innate musicality and her passion for
singing became obvious already as a child. At the age of thirteen she started to sing in the
local church choir. After Highschool she worked for a few years in Cape Town to fund her music
studies that she eventually started in 2015 at COPA in Johannesburg. At this time, she had already
recorded dozens of songs, based on vocal improvisations and instrumental loops.
In June and July 2015, she recorded at morph2 Recording in Zurich her first EP AT LAST with 4 Songs,
collaborating with dutch guitarist Jordi Kemperman and british sound engineer Nigel Hilbourne. In
the same month she was invited to perform as the opening act at Literatur Openair Festival Zurich.
For this appearance, Jozia cooperated with renowed choreographer Paula Lansley (GB) and the
Company of Dancers Zurich. The audience – around 400 people – was so excited about Jozia‘s performance
that the festival organizer decided to invite her for another set the following day. After this
success, JOZIA was invited for further shows in Europe, including concerts in Rotterdam and Zurich.
From April until August 2016, she recorded together with Kevin Leicher her first full album
Mamokebe at Darkstar Studio, Johannesburg, produced by Swiss Art Foundation Society of Arts.
JOZIA has a very unique way of composing her music which she describes as follows: »When I write
a song, the music happens to me like a vision or a dream. From the beginning, it comes with an
overall idea of the song as if it were already recorded – the melody is there as well as the mood, the
structure, the rhythm, the lyrics of the chorus, and even the instrumentation. The first thing I do is
to record this sketch of the song on my mobile phone. Later, I use my singing skills also as an „instrument“
or tool to direct the other musicians how I want them to play: I sing a capella the melody
for the guitar or the bass line and I produce the rhythm of the percussion with my hands, etc.«
From September to November 2016, Jozia travelled across the United States and Mexico to shoot
two of her music videos: JULIO and MAMOKEBE. Back in Europe, Jozia produced two other music
videos in November and December 2016: NJALO and DLOZILAME.
The Album Release Show was performed on Saturday 8th July 2017 as an seated openair concert
in the unique setting of the Old Botanical Garden in Zurich, attended by more than 300 people.
The atmosphere was magical and JOZIA received enthusiastic reactions from the audience for her
stunning performance. There‘s a LIVE RECORDING VIDEO on youtube – Jozia performing ‚Always‘
(Njalo) – that gives a good impression about this special evening.
